Spouting Horn is located on the South Shore in Kauai; it’s a natural blowhole carved out in the lava that forms the ledges at the water’s edge. When the ocean tide flows into Spouting Horn, it gets pushed into a small chamber. Air is forced up and out along with the water, creating a stream of water and mist and an auditory cue- a hissing sound.  Hawaiian legend says that Kaikapu, a lizard goddess, was trapped by the fisherman Liko, who then tricked her into getting in the blowhole. The hissing sound Spouting Horn makes as the water exits the lava cave is the sound of Kaikapu’s angry roar. The eye is drawn to the water spouting out of the blowhole as it is the focal point. However, after you observe this, you begin to notice the beautiful colors of the sunset in the background, how it reflects off the ocean, and all the rich details in the lava stone surrounding the blowhole. What a stunning moment!
